January 6 & 7 - Orthodox Christmas

Many Ukrainians as well as other orthodox Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.  It is an annual public holiday across the Ukraine and falls on January 7, the Orthodox Christmas date.  The period from January 7-14 is a festive week, in which it is customary for some people to dress up, visit homes, sing Christmas songs (eg. Kolyadka), and wish each other blessings. A Ukrainian Christmas dinner may often include dishes such as:

Kutia (sweet grain pudding).
Borshch (beet soup).
Vushka (small dumplings with mushroom).
Varenyky (dumplings with cabbage and potatoes).
Holubtsi (stuffed cabbage roll).

DEC 11/12 - CITY HALL - Hamilton
RE: Community Impact - City Of Hamilton Proposed Rental Property Licensing - The HDAA,  RAHB (Realtor's Association Hamilton Burlington ) and Tenant's have each been working against the city's proposal to license all residential landlords. For anyone who rents in the city, it would mean (if passed) an immediate substantial rental increase to cover the cost of the program (the program itself is not cost-recoverable and is expected to lose money from day 1).  Many of the stakeholders believe this is a bad idea, as it would effect communities and the 40% of Hamiltonian's that are renters.  The next scheduled committee meeting about this is on DEC 11/12 at City Hall. On Sept 18/12, the above stakeholders filled city hall council chambers in opposition and will continue to do so until defeated.  A new on-line petition has been started and we are encouraging people to sign it asap.
